Ms. Natsumi Iwata (D2) was awarded the best presentation prize among students in “The 67 Physical Society of Japan Spring Conference in 2012”(Kansaigakuin University, Nishinomiya Uegahara Campus)
Physical Society of Japan field 2 (fundamental plasma, plasma science, fusion plasma and plasma astrophysics) provides “best presentation award among students those who are praised as well as contribution toward physical development in the future. Due to big earthquake last year, the previous conference in March, 2011 was cancelled. The 67 Physical Society of Japan in March 24-27, 2012 spring conference was held as the first congress after disaster. In this conference, 4 students were awarded as the best presentation prize among 24 students. As one of 4 students, Ms.Natsumi Iwata was awarded the best presentation award. In her presentation, she reported the theoretical study of ponderomotive force in high intensity laser fields, which is based on a phase space Lagrangian formalism referred to as the noncanonical Lie perturbation theory, and showed a new formula of the relativistic ponderomotive force that includes higher-order nonlocal effects. It is pointed out that a coordinate including the laser phase and a constant of motion as the variables provides a simple form of the equation system. She also noted that the parity relation of the ponderomotive force can be explained from the view point of symmetry of spatial derivatives of the laser field profile, which would correspond to an essential concept in physics. Her presentation was very excellent including Q & A sessions, so that it was recognized to deserve as “the best presentation award. (Please be referred to "photo" link)

Title:"Study of the nonlinear dynamics of double tearing modes to understand explosive magnetic reconnection in fusion and astrophysical plasmas"
Abstract:The present PhD thesis aims to understand the underlying physical mechanisms of the trigger leading to abrupt and explosive magnetic reconnection events as well as the subsequent nonlinear dynamics. It provides numerical and theoretical studies based on the reduced resistive MHD model. Dr. Miho Janvier focused particularly on the nonlinear simulation of the double tearing mode (DTM) in magnetically confined fusion plasma which magnetic structure is two-dimensionally deformed with a slow time scale prior to the abrupt and explosive events. Her underlying idea was that the event resulted from the emergence of a kind of "secondary instability" which free energy is ascribed to the structural deformation of the magnetic islands. She explored a new computational methodology and successfully proved that hypothesis. She characterized the secondary instability exhibiting a critical threshold for the structural deformation and referred to it as the structure-driven nonlinear instability. Interestingly, nature in general is filled with hardly predictable sudden and violent events which are a long-standing concern for human life. The insights given by Dr. Miho Janvier in her PhD thesis provide essential view points in understanding these events dominated by wide range of complex nonlinear dynamics.

【New Paper Issue】 "Critical parameters for the nonlinear destabilization of double tearing modes in reversed shear plasmas" by Janvier Miho(D3)in Nuclear Fusion Vol.51,2011
Janvier Miho, Y.Kishimoto and J.Q.Li:"Critical parameters for the nonlinear destabilization of double tearing modes in reversed shear plasmas " in Nuclear Fusion Vol.51, 2011

To investigate the nonlinear evolution of the double tearing mode (DTM) in reversed magnetic shear plasmas, characterized by a sudden and abrupt growth of the kinetic and magnetic energies, leading to full reconnection, we conduct a systematic study of the parameters based on the numerical resolution of the reduced magnetohydrodynamic equations in slab geometry. By introducing an instability parameter Δ'DTM, we reveal three regimes for the evolution of the DTM: (1) a linearly stable regime (0 < Δ'DTM < Δ'1), (2) a linearly unstable regime but leading to the saturation of magnetic islands (Δ'1 < Δ'DTM < Δ'2) and (3) a linearly unstable regime leading to full reconnection (Δ'2 < Δ'DTM). The critical value Δ'2 delimiting regimes (2) and (3) corresponds to a critical island width wc above which the nonlinear destabilization is triggered. We successfully determine the critical threshold in (xs, ky) space, which is fun! damental for the prediction of explosive DTMs, as well as to understand the underlying mechanisms. Here, xs and ky, respectively the distance between the two rational surfaces and the unstable wavenumber, determine the free energy contained in the equilibrium system. Moreover, wc calculated at the trigger of regime (3) is found to be independent of resistivity, supporting the idea that the nonlinear destabilization results from a structure-driven instability.

A.Sugahara, Y.Kishimoto:"Remote Research System Focused on Large-Scale Simulation" Plasma and Fusion Research Vol. 87, 2011

In recent years, the importance of large -scale with simulation super parallel processing in science/engineering division is getting of more importance. This tendency is similar to large-scale experimental research and it archived a harvest accomplishment based on discussion / exchange meeting by not only the researchers who study the simulation but also the researches who study the theory /experiment. We conducted the development for the remote research system focusing on large-scale simulation, the so-called SIMON (Simulation Monitoring System) (reference:vol.84, pp.51 2008). This system can transfer the simulation results on the computer to Web site at the moment and it enables a great number of co-op researches who stay in the different places to see the monitor and join their research. This paper sophisticates the system process overall and makes the reliability/ security level progress in net connection. In parallel, it demonstrates the procedure to meet the different level for application function of visualization in order to establish more effective analytical circumstance on the Web. As one example, we introduce this system was successfully adaptable for T2K system in Kyoto University and super computer in NIFS.

【New Paper Issue】 "Stability Analysis of Relativistic Electron Beams in a Wiggler with Harmonic Gyro -Resonance Using the Lie Perturbation Method- " by K.Imadera (Assistant Prof.) in Plasma and Fusion Research Vol. 4, 2011
K.Imadera, Y.Kishimoto:"Stability Analysis of Relativistic Electron Beams in a Wiggler with Harmonic Gyro-Resonance Using the Lie Perturbation Method " Plasma and Fusion Research Vol. 4, 2011

The non-canonical Lie perturbation method for analyzing relativistic electron beams in free electron lasers [Y. Kishimoto et al., Phys. Plasmas 2, 1316 (1995)] is extended to the case with harmonic gyro-resonance due to the coexistence of a focusing wiggler and an axial guiding field, which allow the maximum beam current to be increased. By using non-canonical guiding-center variables, we have solved the particle motion not only far from the harmonic gyro-resonance but also near the resonance. Far from the resonance, the maximum beam current is found to increase in proportion to (Bg/Bw)2 (Bw and Bg are the strength of the wiggler and guiding fields, respectively). On the other hand, near the resonance, the beam is found to be confined in a finite radial region and then transmitted because of higher order secular perturbations.

Z. X. Wang, J. Q. Li, J. Q. Dong, and Y. Kishimoto Generic Mechanism of Microturbulence Suppression by Vortex Flows" Physical Review Letters, vol. 103, 015004 (2009)Abstract

It was clarified to bring the controlling effect to turbulent flow with micro [uzu] style (vortexflow) the macro that the MHD mode etc. made in the present study though a lot of researches had been performed up to now as for the turbulent transfer when the laminar air flow and the zonal flow existed. The development in the future is expected as an important basic concept of understanding complex dynamics of plasma that coexists swing various scales.
